Wreck (2022), Episode 5 – Needle In A Gaystack

The Reveal

8th October 2022

We left Jamie, Oscar Kennedy (“School’s Out Forever”, “Ladhood (TV)”), having fought with Sam, Louis Boyer (“The Ledge”, “Outside the Wire”), and then being knocked about by the arriving Karen, Harriet Webb (“Medusa Deluxe”, “Tomo (Short)”), who appears to be in charge of everything.

The officers are looking for Vivian, Thaddea Graham (“Doctor Who (TV)”, “Curfew (TV)”), because she’s Jamie’s friend. Jamie manages to escape from Sam whilst Cormac, Peter Claffey (“Bad Sisters (TV)”, “Harry Wild (TV)”), and his Cher look-alike girlfriend Rosie, Miya Ocego (“The Extraordinary Life of April Ashley”), arrive in the nick of time to save Jamie and Olly, Anthony Rickman (“Enola Holmes”),.

Jamie, Vivian, Cormac, Rosie, Lily, Ramanique Ahluwalia (“Catch a Butcher (Short)”, “Heart’s Ease (Short)”), and Olly meet-up to come up with a plan. They need to find the room Jamie was kept in and get a photo of Jerome who, for some reason, has been left in there.

Karen announces to the rest of the crew that for every hour Vivian and Jamie aren’t in her custody they’ll all be docked a day’s wage. Vivian dons a disguise to get to Lily’s cabin and inform her parents. Jamie and co head back to the prayer room to find the secret room and Jerome.

The gang find themselves inside the walls of the ship and decide to split up (classic). This means that, somewhat inevitably, it is Jamie and Olly that wind-up finding where the tunnels lead, right to Karen and the boss of it all Henry Allan, Donald Sage Mackay (“The Pentaverate (TV)”, “Deep State (TV)”).

The pair are strapped to chairs, Sam behind them, in front of some large monitors whilst Karen radios for things to start…what are they watching? What will they see?

Vivian meanwhile is in Lily’s room, waiting for her saviour. When Lily finally arrives it’s not with who Vivian hoped for and the outcome won’t be what she’d hoped for either.

With the reveal of what’s actually going on in all this you realise, if you hadn’t already, it’s all very Squid Game, only, nowhere near as good. It’s inevitable we’ll end up with programs similar to Squid Game, it was so popular after all, whether you like that or not, well, that’s up to you.

With regard to Wreck it’s obvious the budgets are nowhere what Squid Game had, for example, and whilst there are moments of gore and violence that surprised me in how much you actually see, for a BBC program, they’re still some way short of what you’ll see elsewhere.
