Jean-Luc Picard, Patrick Stewart (“Logan”, “Green Room”), is on a ship, somewhere, talking to a doctor, James Callis (“Bridget Jones’s Baby”, “Battlestar Galactica (TV)”). It’s a psych evaluation but Picard doesn’t know why he’s there.
The doctor hands Picard a model of the sun and asks him to tell him a story. Picard doesn’t really tell stories but begins telling one about a red-haired queen who happens to be his mother, Yvette, Madeline Wise (“Single Drunk Female (TV)”, “Crashing (TV)”), with a young Picard, Dylan Von Halle.
The pair are painting a window at the Chateaux when suddenly the painting begins to come alive and the pair are forced to flee to the basement, somewhere young Picard does not like going.
Seven of Nine, Jeri Ryan (“Devil’s Revenge”, “Bosch (TV)”), and Raffi Musiker, Michelle Hurd (“Blindspot (TV)”, “Hawaii Five-0 (TV)”), beam back to the ship to try and locate Dr. Agnes Jurati, Alison Pill (“Them (TV)”, “Devs (TV)”), but find themselves locked out of the ship by Borg encryption.
Back in Picard’s mind and Laris / not Laris, Orla Brady (“The Foreigner”, “Into the Badlands (TV)”), arrives to try and help. Just by being there she is changing the story Picard is telling the doctor. She finds a young, scared Picard, alone and he tells her they must find his mother, must save her.
Monsters attack both young Picard and Laris, they know Laris shouldn’t be there.
Meanwhile Raffi and Seven have found some CCTV footage of Jurati on the ship, injecting it with Borg code, it doesn’t take more than that for them to realise what’s going on.
Back in Picard’s head and both he and the doctor are now with young Picard and Laris. The doctor is more than Picard’s shrink though and he begins telling Picard some home truths, things he’d forgotten or no longer wished to remember in the way they actually were.
Picard wakes up, Laris is convinced there’s more to the story and thinks they should talk about it but Picard has other ideas. He believes he needs to speak to Q, John de Lancie (“Manipulated”, “When the Train Stops (Short)”), to find out why this trial is so important to him.
He heads to young Guinan, Ito Aghayere (“Logan Lucky”, “Carol’s Second Act (TV)”), who is able to summon a ‘Q’, although she’s reluctant, she does so. However, it’s not a Q that arrives but an Agent Wells, Jay Karnes (“12 Monkeys (TV)”, “The Crossing (TV)”), from the FBI.
A mixed bag of an episode that verged on being a full on horror episode at some points. I’m sure, read hope, that all of this is going to come together at the end in a “ahhh” moment, otherwise it’s all feeling a bit ‘meh’.
