Star Trek: Picard – Episode 6, Two Of One

Solo Singing Duo

7th April 2022

We kick things off with episode six with Jean-Luc Picard, Patrick Stewart (“Logan”, “Green Room”), in trouble, bleeding, unconscious, but we don’t know why, not yet. We flip back exactly 34 minutes.

Laris / not Laris, Orla Brady (“The Foreigner”, “Into the Badlands (TV)”), Picard and Cristóbal Rios’, Santiago Cabrera (“Big Little Lies (TV)”, “The Flight Attendant (TV)”), are waiting in line to get into the party whilst Dr. Agnes Jurati, Alison Pill (“Them (TV)”, “Devs (TV)”), and her new friend The Borg Queen, Annie Wersching (“Bosch (TV)”, “Runaways (TV)”), are still tied to a chair.

In the nick of time, as per, Jurati manages to free herself, with the help of the Queen and alter the database so the trio can get in.

Renée Picard, Penelope Mitchell (“The Hyperions”, “Hellboy”), is drinking heavily at the party and generally looking troubled. She is on her phone and Laris/not Laris sees that she is messaging her therapist, which we know is Q, John de Lancie (“Manipulated”, “When the Train Stops (Short)”).

She is saying she can’t do it, she’s going to tell her boss she’ll quit and Q is encouraging her. Picard has seen and heard enough and decides he’s going to speak to her, much to Laris not Laris’ dismay, but it’s the only way.

They need to get Renée’s boss out of the way but Jurati is acting weird, talking to herself / the Queen and misses Picard trying to get hold of her. The Queen wants to take control of Jurati whilst Jurati believes she can retain control of herself.

Whilst Picard is on an intercept mission to Renée he is stopped by Dr. Adam Soong, Brent Spiner (“Penny Dreadful: City of Angels (TV)”, “Independence Day: Resurgence”). Soong tells him they have a mutual ‘friend’ in Q. Picard tells him to stay away from that man, Soong tells him to stay away from Renée.

Obviously, neither can do what the other wants and it transpires that Soong has made a large donation to the Europa Mission and is now on the board, he informs security that Picard should be ejected.

Jurati is having an existential crisis and the Queen is in her ear and then knocks the power out as a distraction and then Jurati begins singing to increase the distraction. I’ll say that again, Jurati begins singing as a distraction.

Picard meets Renée and manages to have a chat with her. Not just any old chat though, he manages to completely transform her thinking almost instantly, who knew it would be so easy, and she decides to go ahead with the mission.

For reasons to do with story progression, they walk back to the party via the outside which gives Soong a chance to attempt to do what Q asked of him, take Renée out. Only, Picard saves her, sacrificing himself in the process.

Cris takes Picard to his doctor friend whilst Soong goes home and acts weird around Kore Soong, Isa Briones (“Takers”, “Lonely Boy”). When she goes to bed, Kore begins looking her father up online and then finds some video diaries that show other girls have been in Soong’s life, she’s not the first.

A short episode, or at least it feels that way, which isn’t a bad thing as it feels like this part of the story has taken more than enough time. The next episode feels like it is set up nicely for perhaps some interesting sci-fi-ness, which is more than we can say about these.
