Back in 1918 and a man is in the forest when he spots a path, following it he finds a house..the house, just in a clearing, all on its own. He enters to see signs of a struggle and someone hanging from the rafters by their neck, they’re in a tracksuit, not 1918 clothes. A note underneath them that says ‘all yours’.
Harper, Jamie Bell (“6 Days”, “Rocketman”), is the next one through the door, covered in Dan Velazquez’s, Wagner Moura (“Narcos (TV)”, “Sergio”), blood. But the house isn’t the same, there’s a dog in the hallway, one he doesn’t recognise.
Sharon / Kirby Mazrachi, Elisabeth Moss (“The Invisible Man”, “The Square”), takes Jin-Sook’s, Phillipa Soo (“Dopesick (TV)”, “The Bite (TV)”), purse and tells her who she is now, she must live this life. Sharon / Kirby meanwhile goes to Dan’s house but it’s not his house anymore, someone else lives there.
She goes to the newspaper offices, sleeps there. In the morning she discovers she’s a reporter now, working a case, but not her case, she sits where Dan sat. No-one seems to know who he is until the morning briefing and she discovers he’s been murdered.
Harper is with Leo, Christopher Denham (“Utopia (TV)”, “Billions (TV)”), at the veterans home. He’s trying to get him to tell him where the videotape is. He knows he gives it to someone and that’s how they find him. But Leo has dementia and can’t remember if he has it, let alone where it is, all he wants is to go back to the house and go home, to his own time.
Jin-Sook tells Sharon / Kirby that everything about her life was the same, up until the date of Sharon / Kirby’s attack, then it all changed. She says she thinks the three of them are caught up in an entanglement and perhaps getting rid of one will free the others.
When Sharon / Kirby next goes to the offices she is no longer a reporter but back in the archives and someone else is covering Dan’s murder. She leaves Jin-Sook upstairs and she is taken by the police as, suddenly, no-one knows who Sharon / Kirby is either.
Sharon / Kirby goes to see the morgue technician, the woman, to ask about Dan and convinces her to let her see the possessions he had. She finds an old wallet and inside is the photograph with the address of the house on it, she heads to it, alone.
Wondering around she finds all the trinkets that Harper has been putting in the women, including her own earrings from the night in the bar. When Harper arrives home later the videotape featuring Kara is on TV playing over and over, then Sharon / Kirby attacks him. They fight.
Then we’re back in the scene when Kara is dancing and Harper pays her a visit. Except, she’s different, doesn’t want to see him and she’s finishing his sentences, even saying things at the same time as him. He doesn’t understand what’s going on.
Then we see him at the apartment of the old woman, she leaves, he breaks in, but the beeping watch is left out, on the bed and there’s a polaroid of Harper, at the bed, looking at the watch. Taken from the window, as if it had just been taken. On the back of the polaroid is the address of the house.
Next, he and Leo visit the house, break in as we’ve seen previously, except this time there’s a difference, this time they aren’t alone and it’s not an old man waiting for them.
Shining Girls has been a fantastic season and it looks like we may get more, I hope so as I’ve enjoyed it a lot. Sure, it’s been a real head scratcher at times, particularly at the beginning and I confess I didn’t click that it was all to do with the house, but it’s been great; well written, well directed and very well performed.
