Shining Girls, Episode 7 – Offset

The Switching Is Spreading

25th June 2022

It’s the 1980’s, big hair, shoulder pads, suit jackets with rolled up sleeves, you know the sort of thing. Sharon / Kirby Mazrachi, Elisabeth Moss (“The Invisible Man”, “The Square”), heads home, a spring in her step, she’s just got her first byline, big news, her mom is at her place and she tells her.

She takes her dog for a walk, it’s a busy place, people everywhere, but this doesn’t stop her getting attacked, this is the night it all changed for her.

Sharon / Kirby is telling the story to Jin-Sook, Phillipa Soo (“Dopesick (TV)”, “The Bite (TV)”), and Dan Velazquez, Wagner Moura (“Narcos (TV)”, “Sergio”). Jin-Sook is recounting the tale of her meet with Harper, Jamie Bell (“6 Days”, “Rocketman”), on the roof of the planetarium. Sharon / Kirby tells her Harper has already killed her, he just hasn’t done it yet.

Dan and Sharon / Kirby are watching the home movie Harper made featuring Klara again. They hear the name “Tinie’s” and decide to see if it’s a place. Luckily Marcus, Chris Chalk (“Perry Mason (TV)”, “Godzilla vs. Kong”), remembers it when Sharon / Kirby talks to him later. It’s a meat packing factory.

Sharon / Kirby tries to tell Marcus that she doesn’t know him, that the life he knows with her is one she hasn’t lived yet. Naturally, he’s sceptical and thinks she’s working too hard, or it’s all Dan’s fault.

Dan and Sharon / Kirby go to Tinie’s and find out that Klara did work there, she was also killed there and covered in Uranium, this was in the 1920’s, they both thought it was much more recent, how could she be on video tape?

The owners have some union cards from back in the day and they find both Klara and Harper, though the name on his simply says John Smith. He worked at the plant, that’s where he’s learnt his cutting skills.

Jin-Sook is practicing her speech at the Planetarium when her mic goes down and someone begins playing what sounds like a murder over the speakers, hers? She realises it’s Harper in the booth, she gets out.

Marcus talks to Abi, Erika Alexander (“Black Lightning (TV)”, “Wu-Tang: An American Saga (TV)”), the editor of the paper and convinces her to give Sharon / Kirby a leave of absence. This does not go down well with Sharon / Kirby, even more so when she finds out it was Marcus who did it.

Dan and his son are in the office when the police report arrives from Klara’s death. It has a receipt from 1981 for a bar, the bar, they head there but they aren’t the only ones who have made that journey.

The big night for Jin-Sook was also when she met her untimely death with Harper, something we saw way at the start. This time however, it’s not Harper who turns up but Sharon / Kirby. However, when Jin-Sook goes to give her speech, everything’s changed and no-one recognises her, even Sharon / Kirby has changed.

A great episode of Shining Girls, the penultimate no-less, though I get the feeling we’re going to be left open for a second season. We will see what the final brings us. Answers or more questions?
