Severance – Episode 4, The You You Are

I Hear The Phone A Buzzin’

4th March 2022

Helly R, Britt Lower (“High Maintenance (TV)”, “Future Man (TV)”), is facing a tortuous time in the ‘break room’. She’s read the wording 259 times but still Mr. Milchick, Tramell Tillman (“Godfather of Harlem (TV)”, “Elementary (TV)”), doesn’t believe she’s being sincere.

He makes her return the next day, which to Helly is in an instant and when she finally reappears it is gone 11am. Mark Scout, Adam Scott (“Big Little Lies (TV)”, “Between Two Ferns: The Movie”), asks her how many times she read it, she replies, 1,072.

Burt, Christopher Walken (“The Jungle Book”, “Seven Psychopaths”), from Optics & Design (O&D) swings by with some new handbook totes and invites everyone for a tour of O&D. Dylan, Zach Cherry (“Duncanville (TV)”, “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”), says ‘hard pass’ but Burt goes immediately.

Burt shows Irving around including Irving’s favourite painting which is no longer on display. Whilst looking at it, the two touch hands and Irving gets nervous and bolts. Whilst walking back he finds the book that Mr. Milchick was reading, the one that Mark’s brother-in-law, Rickon, Michael Chernus (“Werewolves Within”, “Materna”), left for him.

He calls on Mark and Dylan, following the chain of command like he’s supposed to. Dylan tells Mark to keep it, Mark says he’ll hand it in, he doesn’t, particularly when he sees the note on the cover addressed to him.

Helly finds the map that Petey Kelmer, Yul Vazquez (“The Outsider (TV)”, “I Am the Night (TV)”), left, Dylan sees it too. Mark doesn’t like being called a hypocrite and shreds it, to prove a point.

Helly decides she has had enough, she threatens to cut off her fingers with a guillotine if Peggy / Ms Cobel, Patricia Arquette (“Boardwalk Empire (TV)”, “Boyhood”), doesn’t get her a video camera so she can record her resignation.

They have to concede and she steps into the elevator with the DVD and instantly reappears in the elevator with a different DVD, the contents of which do not make for happy watching for her.

Meanwhile, outside of work, Mark learns that Petey has died. He hides his mobile phone in the basement, which has been ringing from a blocked number, a lot.

At the funeral he bumps into Peggy / Ms Cobel who is there for the chip in Petey’s head. As the episode draws to a close we see Irving discover something he probably shouldn’t have seen in O&D, Dylan finds Mark’s book and starts reading and Helly finds a different way to end things.

A frenetic episode of Severance, written by Kari Drake (“Lost in Space (TV)”, “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance (TV)”) and directed by Aoife McArdle (“All of This Unreal Time (Short)”, “Kissing Candice”).

Will Irving tell anyone what he saw? Will Mark ever answer Petey’s mobile? What will happen to Helly?
