Limitless, Episode 4 – Strength

Chris Hemsworth Climbs A Rope

9th November 2022

We are back with Mr Thor himself, Chris Hemsworth as he takes another look at how to fend off the ageing process and this time it’s all about strength and how that can help when we get older.

Chris is back with mad Englishman Ross Edgley who this time round decides to challenge Chris to climb a rope. Sounds simple enough, right? The rope will be 100 foot in length. So, getting tougher. The rope will also be hanging from a cable car between two mountains, so there’s that too.

You may think that this would be no problem for Hemsworth, particularly as he’s starting to bulk up and train for the next Thor movie too. However, that bulk is not going to help him climb the rope, the exact opposite in fact.

And, whilst Chris’ training will help to an extent, he’s only ever trained in the traditional manner of gym routines: back, legs, arms, chest, when in reality, in order to climb this rope, he’s going to need to use so many more muscles and stamina.

This latter point is of particular concern for Hemsworth as it’s not his favourite thing, he’s always preferred sprinting to marathons as he tells Ross. So, Ross decides to change-up his routine, gives him much more training outside of the gym, a lot which is actually what you’ll see the strongmen do.

We also meet some extraordinary older people in various parts of the world who are defying the ageing process. From a man who started cycling in his 50’s and now does thousands of kilometres to a woman in her 80’s who has one bodybuilding competitions whilst in her 70’s.

These people, when studied by science, have something in common, that is that their immune system belies their age. When scientists studied these people, they found some had the immune system of people in their 20’s.

It is this remarkable turn-up that Hemsworth is trying to replicate in his bid to be healthy well into his old age. We learn the science behind why your muscles are so important, but that you need to work as many of them as possible and not neglecting your stamina.

As for the task itself, well, it’s a tough one, particularly when Hemsworth manages to rupture ligaments in his ankle falling from his own rope setup. This forces his training to slow down, though not by much.

Then he has to go back on set for Thor and put on quite a bit of weight, bulking up, none of which helps in his bid to climb 100 foot up a rope, hanging from a cable-car.

Will he make it up? Can he summon the determination? Will his stamina see him reach the top?

This is the penultimate of the Limitless with Chris Hemsworth series, the final one sees him entering a retirement village wearing an ageing suit. Will he accept the ageing process or will this spur him on to do more of what he’s learnt?
