Limitless, Episode 2 – Shock

Chris Hemsworth Gets Cold, Very Cold

9th November 2022

Chris Hemsworth, alongside brothers Liam and Luke and friend and surfing champion Mick Fanning, head to Norway to experience the ice cold water on offer with a task to swim just 250 yards, about 230 metres in proper measurements.

They are with mad Englishman Ross Edgley, the first man to swim around Great Britain, a man with a penchant for ice-cold.

This follows recent research that suggests exposing your body to both extreme cold, as well as extreme heat, can have amazing health benefits, particularly in the future as you get older.

Stepping out of our relatively comfortable lives with our heated homes and layers of clothing to experience the icy cold, once we have overcome the initial shock of the cold, can see our body release good chemicals, even helping with chronic pain conditions.

At the other end of the spectrum, regular use of a sauna is now thought to massively decrease your later chances in life of heart disease and alziehmers, though it should be noted that the research on the latter point is still early.

Anyway, in this episode, alongside some stunning shots of the ice-cold Norwegian landscape, and plenty of shots of Chris Hemsworth in not much clothing, Edgley begins to subject him to the cold.

He begins by submerging him in a calm, flat piece of water at first, treading water, Hemsworth is immediately taken by the cold and you can see him desperately attempting to control his breathing, whilst Edgley alongside is laughing and joking as if he’s in the local municipal pool.

Next it’s on to prolonged exposure and Edgley gives Hemsworth, a keen surfer since the age of ten, the opportunity of a lifetime: to surf in near freezing water alongside surfing champion Fanning.

The pair head out and do manage to catch some surf, but both are clearly suffering from the cold, even with the wet suits. Their muscles ache earlier, balance is off and generally it’s not an enjoyable experience.

Putting this together, Hemsworth is given a safety briefing, where he’s told he might die, prior to taking the plunge for his big swim. Will he make it? Can he reach his destination or will the cold take hold?

What’s excellent about these series from Aronofsky is that it’s not just some big star heading off to do things some of us can only dream about. It’s them being taken out of their comfort zone and backed up by science, be that emerging or well understood, so you can see the benefits and reasons behind what they’re doing.

This, coupled with Hemsworth who just comes across as an overall nice guy, and the stunning scenery is what makes these documentary series from Aronofsky so watchable.
