What is it about the second seat at some teams in motorsport? We have seen it in MotoGP and Formula 1. You have one person who seems to click with the car/bike and can win races, whilst other drivers/riders come and go and don’t seem to get it on with it at all.
So, we switch to Red Bull Racing or, more specifically, we actually switch to their sister team Scuderia AlphaTauri where we find former Red Bull Racing driver Pierre Gasly who was famously swapped from RBR to SAT with Alex Albon going the other way.
Gasly is obviously hurt by the decision that was made and in particular when he reads comments from Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner saying that he won’t be coming back to Red Bull despite currently driving better than Albon.
Gasly gets really annoyed at this, claiming it is a ‘joke’ how it is all being dealt with and it spurs him on no end and sees him racing out of his skin, even winning a race. This is at Monza when Gasly and Albon line-up side-by-side.
Going into one of the early corners the pair touch, Albon ends up plum last whilst Gasly is forced to pit, however, this turns out to be very fortunate after Leclerc sticks his Ferrari into a wall, resulting in a red flag.
Gasly is now out of sync with the rest of the field in terms of pit-stops and, when Hamilton pits despite the pit lane being closed and is subsequently hit with a time penalty, Gasly takes full advantage to win the race.
Albon meanwhile is suffering the Red Bull Racing second driver syndrome that seems to affect some, particularly recently.
Despite some stellar results when he first moved to the team he is unable to replicate them this year. He has been unfortunate on a number of occasions too, particularly when it comes to racing alongside Hamilton, but still, it is clear that he is not gelling with the car this year.
He is under pressure and feeling it but he is a quiet and calm man, part of the reason you feel he perhaps doesn’t sit so well alongside Horner who seems to enjoy the feisty nature of drivers.
Both drivers seasons will, ultimately, continue along the paths they are currently on.
