Formula 1: Drive To Survive – Episode 3, Nobody’s Fool

Nobody’s Fool

13th March 2021

As the season continues, Netflix appears to be spending an episode with each team and this time round, to the joy of many and eye-rolling of others, we are with Mercedes.

There’s a particular focus on Valteri Bottas and what it means to be the team mate to a multiple world champion, Lewis Hamilton.

Netflix join the team at Sochi in Russia and are quick to remind Bottas, and us, of this time two years ago when Mercedes forced Bottas to move aside and let Hamilton through to take the win, something Bottas was not happy with.

This time round, during qualifying, Hamilton puts in a stormer of a lap, putting him on provisional pole. Bottas knows, and tells us, that at Sochi you want to either be in pole or third, second isn’t where you want to be.

This jars with what Mercedes want though, they like their drivers being one, two, in all sessions.

After Hamilton’s lap, Bottas crosses the line but isn’t able to beat it, he is however, in front of Max Verstappen and, despite the team telling him to get out of the way and not give Verstappen a tow, which would make him quicker, Bottas does just that, knowing that there’s a good chance it will give Verstappen second and make him third.

Mercedes engineers and Toto Wolff are furious at him, but Bottas does it anyway and Verstappen ends up second, Bottas being in the third position he wants to be.

We also hear from Nico Rosberg who, it has to be said, looks as smug as a smug thing in smugsville on national smug day. He’s talking about the fact he managed to beat Hamilton over the course of a season and says Hamilton has weaknesses (of course he does).

For those of you who followed the season you will remember the race will also remember this is when Lewis does a practice start at the end of the pit lane, resulting in a ten second time penalty during the race.

This, along with a whole bunch of crashes on the opening lap, give Bottas a great chance to win the race, which he grasps.

What is weird on this is hearing Toto Wolff, Mercedes team principle, telling Bono, Lewis Hamilton’s engineer, what to say to him on the radio, “say this exactly”, it’s bizarre.

Do we learn anything new? Well, we do hear the radio transmissions between Hamilton and his team when he asks about doing his practice start elsewhere. They don’t tell him not to, which may be why his punishment wasn’t as severe as some expected.

We also hear Bottas being pretty blunt about not being happy with being told to move out of the way, or him not being happy with some comments on social media with people saying he’s rubbish. Though I think most F1 fans will know this already.
