Extrapolations – Episode 3, 2047

Daveed Diggs Tries To Save His Synagogue

10th March 2023

We are now in 2047 and this time we are back with Rabbi Marshall Zucker, Daveed Diggs (“Wonder”, “Snowpiercer (TV)”), who decided, it seems, to head to Miami and take the job his father lined up for him after all.

Scott Z. Burns (“Contagion”, “The Bourne Ultimatum”) hands over directorial duties to Gregory Jacobs with many people taking on writing duties based on Burns’ story.

We begin with David Schwimmer (“The Laundromat”, “Madagascar”) who has recently moved to the same part of Miami as Zucker’s Synagogue with his wife and daughter Alana Goldblatt, Neska Rose (“See Me (Short)”, “Drama Club (TV)”).

It’s clear from the off that Mr. Goldblatt has an interesting background and is only too willing to do whatever it takes to save the synagogue, whatever it takes. Zucker isn’t sure, or perhaps he doesn’t want to know, exactly what he’s going to do, but Alana is not going to be happy about it.

Zucker and his team are in the process of appealing to the government to help save the synagogue with some form of flood defence. But not everything can be saved, not everything will be saved.

Alana is full of questions, like; why is God doing this? Or why is he letting it happen? Or why isn’t he stopping it? The ‘this’ being the catastrophic floods, famine and fires occurring worldwide.

She puts these questions to Zucker and he does his best to answer them whilst attempting to navigate everything else that’s going on in his life. This includes looking after his mother, Leslie Uggams (“Deadpool 2”, “Nurse Jackie (TV)”), who wants to get out on the first boat, not the last one that fails to leave.

As Alan’s disillusionment grows, she makes plans for her Bat Mitzvah, those plans include making a statement, one that not everyone will be happy with, certainly not her father.

If you live in or around Miami I imagine this particular episode will really hit home. There’s frequent mention of certain areas that are flooded ‘no-go’ zones, roads cut off, whole areas gone.

For those of us not that familiar we just have to imagine the extent of things though the CGI’d images certainly help show us the scale of the disaster that is unfolding.

This is, without doubt, the funniest of the three episodes of Extrapolations we have seen thus far. It’s obviously darkly humorous, but humorous none the less.

Beyond this, the message appears to be the same; we got ourselves into this mess, we are making it worse and only we can do anything about it. We are in that position now, let alone some years in the future. What we see now gives me no hope things will change.
