As introductions go, you can’t say that Curfew, Sky One’s latest series, holds back any. Instead it goes straight for the jugular, aiming to establish the place these people now inhabit, as quickly as possible.
That place is the UK, a bleak and totalitarian run state that has a nightly curfew whereby people are made to stay indoors. Shutters bar windows, doors have many locks, no-one seems particularly keen to break this curfew and stay out after dark.
And that’s with good reason, for, a few years earlier than our present viewing, a virus swept across the country, turning people into strange, flesh eating, night walkers who think nothing of devouring their fellow man, rather than just breaking into KFC.
Phoebe Fox (“Eye In The Sky”, “The Woman In Black 2”) is a paramedic in this new world, trying to save the lives of those who are shot by the heavily armed police who have a bad aim.
She also has a secret, a secret she has even kept from her estranged sister Ruby, Aimee-Ffion Edwards (“Peaky Blinders (TV)”, “Detectorists (TV)”), and their mutual friend Malachi Kirby (“Doctor Who (TV)”, “Roots (TV)”).
But, when Ruby and friend show up unannounced on her doorstep, they discover her dark secret, unfortunately for her, they also lead the totalitarian state police right to her doorstep, and they too take a dim view of her little secret.
We are also introduced to a father, Adrian Lester (“The Day After Tomorrow”, “Hustle (TV)”), trying to protect his family and a geezer-mechanic in Sean Bean (“Broken (TV)”, “Drone”).
All of these people, with the exception of Fox, are gearing up for something called ‘the race’, and they all believe winning said race means they get to go to an island where these flesh-eating zombies, don’t live. Though not everyone is convinced by that.
A series of events means that Fox, her sister and Kirby are thrown together at the start of the race. And, whilst that’s the end of episode one for us, it’s just the beginning for our happy little gang.
