Wednesday, June 15 2022. I was in the theater at Dances With Films Film Festival to watch the short film, The Wrong Guy… and I was in the right place. The Wrong Guy, which closed out the short film block that day is the latest from filmmaker Alejandro Montoya Marin. I reviewed his prior work including the feature Millennium Bugs.
The Wrong Guy tells the story of Daniel, portrayed boldly and to great comedic affect by John Kaler. Daniel is a married man and father of two, an assistant bank manager who lives a double life. By night he sneaks out of the house to deliver his own form of petty vigilante justice.
When a driver cuts him off in traffic, that awakens this other side of Daniel. We are then treated to a hilarious montage of Daniel tracking down this driver’s identity from the computer in his mancave. A voice over explains his philosophy and how bad ass he thinks he is, in his own mind.
Outwardly, Daniel is not so skilled, which he realizes after he vandalizes the driver’s vehicle and the owner Richard, played by Kirk Fox (“The Postman”, “Parks and Recreation (TV)”) shows up and has the upper hand. Kirk Fox was perfectly cast as the heavy, making it clear that Daniel has messed with the wrong guy. Fox and Kaler are a match made in comedic heaven, they contrast so well as rivals.
The Wrong Guy is a fun and explosive Action Comedy. Much like the movie Nobody, it is a loving parody playing off of genre films like Death Wish, Dirty Harry and the like. John Kaler fully embraces the role, he was also a producer and wrote The Wrong Guy along with the Writer/Director Alejandro Montoya Marin.
The whole cast shines here, including Jamie Bernadette (“4/20 Massacre”, “NCIS: New Orleans (TV)”) who plays Diana, a co-worker at the bank who keeps Daniel in check. The response to the world premiere screening of The Wrong Guy at Dances With Films was electric. The laughter would build and moments of action prompted claps and cheers. I urge you to seek out The Wrong Guy at a festival screening near you.
The Wrong Guy premise could make a great feature. I do not know if the filmmakers intend this to be a proof of concept, but what I do know is it is a testament to the talent of everyone on screen and behind the scenes.

THE QUICK SELL
Review of the Acton/Comedy short The Wrong Guy. Much in the style of the movie Nobody. The Wrong Guy has a tremendous cast including John Kaler, Kirk Fox and Jamie Bernadette.
