It’s that time of year when lights do a twinkle, mulled wine is warmed and large corporations turn out their Christmas specials. Not quite on the scale of Apple’s recent Spirited, Disney / Marvel bring us The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.
We are in Knowhere as The Guardian’s attempt a rebuild of the city, if that’s what you’d call it. All the gang are here: Mantis, Pom Klementieff, Drax, Dave Bautista, Rocket, Bradley Cooper, Groot, Vin Diesel, Nebula, Karen Gillan, Kraglin, Sean Gunn, and Peter Quill, Chris Pratt.
It’s the latter that is currently feeling down in the dumps and the gang, specifically Mantis, wish to do something to lift his spirits, unfortunately she discusses possibilities with Drax, probably not the best idea.
Drax remembers the one person Peter is always talking about, the man they believe he worships like a god, that man, of course, is none other than Kevin Bacon, currently on Earth finishing some last minute shopping before his family arrive for the Holidays.
Mantis and Drax immediately set off for Earth to find the legendary Kevin Bacon. Of course, they have no idea where Kevin Bacon is, or even what he looks like, but that doesn’t stop the pair as they land on Earth and begin their search.
There’s a bit of a montage as Mantis and Drax try to find Kevin Bacon. Will they ever find him? If they do can they convince him to come back with him? Will they give him a choice? What will Kevin bacon do when he gets there?
The short, well 45 minutes, movie is written and directed by James Gunn and was reportedly made whilst they were making The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
To that end, besides some mushy Christmasness and a few songs, the first of which is very funny, we also get some revelations and get to see a now hench Groot, which may, or may not, be used in the forthcoming movie in some way.
Overall The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is fine, it’s certainly not great, but it’s not bad either, there’s a couple of funny moments but overall it’s a bit too saccharine for my liking.
