I Am Pilate

Easter Comes To Life

12th April 2020

A good time to watch I Am Pilate would be now, at Easter, given that this short movie is a modern, short, telling of Pontius Pilate.

The story sees young journalist Joseph Hau, Jazz Lintott (“The Intent”, “Alien Uprising”), who is sent to former Governor Jeremy Pilate’s, Shaun Scott (“The Bill (TV)”, “Brass (TV)”), home for a fact check on his obituary.

Whilst there, he asks the Governor if he has any regrets and, it transpires, he does. Jeremy begins to tell a tale, which we see in flashback, of him as a young man, played by Jamie Kristian (“Rough Stuff”, “Underbelly (TV)”).

He is brought a prisoner called Alexander Newman, Kayode Akinyemi (“White Powder”, “Rive (Short)”), who he describes as a ‘no-one’.

He wants to know why Alexander sits across from him, why is he there. But he just replies in short sentences, which seems to infuriate Jeremy the younger who has him flogged.

When he visits him later in jail, bruised and bloodied, he tells Alexander, ‘let me help you’, but Alexander looks down on him and says, ‘let me, help you’, before he is dragged off to be hung for treason.

Hau doesn’t understand, believing Pilate’s regret is that he hung a man who was innocent, to which Pilate scoffs he hung many innocent people. His regret was that this man, Alexander, offered him everything he could ever want, right there, in the palm of his hand, and he couldn’t take it.

Written by Kieran Bourne (“Those Of Us (Short)”, “Soft Hands (Short)”) and directed by Femi Oyeniran (“The Intent”, “It’s A Lot”), I Am Pilate is a beautifully shot, timely short film.

Scott excels as the Governor, portraying anguish, fear and pain as he tells his tale. The flashback sequence is well done and fits nicely with the overall movie. A story well told, again.
