A Vital Sign

A Head Scratcher

30th March 2020

A group of adults await their ‘transition’, as the hours tick down they play cards, eat, have laughs. With 18 hours to go Pam, Petra Denison (“Separation (Short)”, “As Time Goes By (Short)”), decides to leave before the time of transition.

This causes much consternation within the group, particularly with Emma, Sashia R. Dumont (“The Gaffer (Short)”, “Adam (Short)”), who can’t understand and is angry at Pam for leaving it until the final hours to change her mind.

With an hour to go the final couple, Roselyn, Kat Lindsay (“Beyond Adversity”, “NY84”), and Manny, Ryan Katzer (“Adam (Short)”, “Manifest (Short)”), along with Pam and her partner Kieron J Anthony (“Adult (TV)”, “End Of The Line”), throw their belongings into a sack, leave them in the house and begin a walk into the woods to a tent with a hexagon drawn on the entrance that matches the medallions they all wear.

They sit in the tent, and Manny reads from a laminated, hand-written note; anyone who wants to leave should do so now, last change, no one does. They place stones at the points of a hexagon on the floor and take a large, white tablet, washed down with a strange-looking, brown liquid.

Then they sleep. Blackout. Until Pam awakens as if from a nightmare. She leaves the now empty tent, believing she’s reached the ‘higher plane’, she’s made it. Until she starts to hear a beeping, something isn’t right.

She wakes again, this time the tent isn’t empty, and what’s left isn’t nice.

A Vital Sign is a head-scratcher of a short film, wait until the credits begin to roll before you see what’s really going on, in case you haven’t guessed.

Written by Dumont and directed by Paul Robinson (“Adam (Short)”, “Clapboard (Short)”), A Vital Sign has a quality that belies it’s meagre budget and has strong performances all round. Strange? Certainly.
