That 2020 will be an extremely difficult year for the film industry has been already proven in the last few months. Delays, productions that have been put on hold, and film festivals that are being cancelled or moved online. More than twenty top film festivals are now coming together for the “We Are One: A Global Film Festival”, an online film festival that will run from the 29th of May until the 7th of June.

During those ten days, you will be able to catch films from festivals including Berlin, Cannes, Toronto, Venice, Sundance, Tribeca, and the BFI Film Festival. According to Tribeca Film Festival founders Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal, the “We Are One: A Global Film Festival” will ‘unite curators, artists, and storytellers to entertain and provide relief to audiences worldwide’.

The online film festival isn’t a replacement of the standalone films festivals themselves as most of the film festival taking place later this year are still planning to go ahead, in a physical or online form. The twenty film festivals that are part of this great initiative are:

  • Annecy International Animation Film Festival
  • Berlin International Film Festival
  • BFI London Film Festival
  • Cannes Film Festival
  • Guadalajara International Film Festival
  • International Film Festival & Awards Macao (IFFAM)
  • Jerusalem Film Festival
  • Mumbai Film Festival (MAMI)
  • Karlovy Vary International Film Festival
  • Locarno Film Festival
  • Marrakech International Film Festival
  • New York Film Festival
  • San Sebastian International Film Festival
  • Sarajevo Film Festival
  • Sundance Film Festival
  • Sydney Film Festival
  • Tokyo International Film Festival
  • Toronto International Film Festival
  • Tribeca Film Festival
  • Venice Film Festival

While there are no details of the programming yet, the festival will showcase films (short and full-length features), documentaries, round table events, music, and comedy. The features that will be part of this online film festival will be mostly smaller and independent ones.

Just don’t expect the major new movies that would be launched at film festivals. They will probably be screened on the big screen in the (near) future. However, don’t let that stop you from catching the incredible films via youtube.com/weareone. The screenings are free and the film industry needs us now more than ever so watch as many movies as you can and show them your support.
