Last night, Hollywood came together for the 77th edition of the Golden Globes. The likes of Chris Evans, Tom Hanks, Aquafina, and Charlize Theron were all present to honour the best talent in television and film. Ricky Gervais was the host this edition needed and wasn’t afraid of starting the ceremony by creating a shockwave.
But hey, shocked or not, the main event of the evening was certainly celebrating film and television talent from both behind and in front of the camera. This came with some surprises (well, were they surprises though?)!
The award for Best Film went to Sam Mendes’ “1917” while Joaquin Phoenix took home the Golden Globe for his tour de force in “Joker“, beating Adam Driver’s stunning performance in “Marriage Story” and Christian Bale and his great acting in “Le Mans ‘66”.
Phoenix didn’t only provide a lasting impression with his performance in “Joker” but also with his speech when receiving the award. He might have stepped on some people’s toes by talking about climate change issues and making a plea for celebrities to use their private jets less often but there’s one thing we can all agree on: it was a memorable speech.
The Golden Globe for Best Actress went to Renée Zellweger and her stunning transformation into Judy Garland in “Judy”. Actress Laura Dern, provide Netflix’s “Marriage Story” with its only award by winning the Golden Globe for ‘Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture’.
On the television side, it was Olivia Colman who took home the award for Best Actress for her role as Queen Elizabeth II in “The Crown”. Brian Cox was awarded the Golden Globe for his performance in HBO’s “Succession”. “Succession” also won the award for ‘Best Television Series – Drama’.
“Fleabag” (‘Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series — Musical or Comedy’, ‘Best Television Series — Musical or Comedy’) and “Chernobyl” (‘Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television’, ‘Best Television Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television’) took home two awards each.
