Top Gun: Maverick – 4k UHD Disc Review

Cruising Into Your Home Theatre

1st November 2022

Available to buy now, take home and keep, if people still do that, is Top Gun: Maverick, the sequel to the classic Top Gun movie. You can read our full review of the movie here, this will purely be about the 4k UHD disc.

Kicking things off with the transfer which, as you’d expect for a modern movie, is wonderfully crisp and sharp, you could see a pin in a haystack, if that was a shot that was actually in the movie of course, which, spoiler alert, there isn’t.

As for extras I was surprised that there weren’t that many and, what there were, felt short, almost music video esq in their creation. It was all confusing up until I hit the final extra, not counting the music videos, which is just shy of an hour long interview with Mr. Cruise at the Cannes Film Festival.

Cleared For Take Off – begins with Tom Cruise saying he wasn’t ever ready to be involved in a sequel unless the story was a good one. He also wanted to do it all practically, which meant the cast would be in F18’s for the shots, so they had to go through a reduced amount of fighter pilot training, compress a few years into a few months.

Cruise put together some aviation training for the cast, something he wished he’d had when doing the first movie. Just over nine minutes in length.

Breaking New Ground – Filming Top Gun: Maverick – More of a technical chat about how they actually made the movie, the cameras involved, where the cameras were placed etc, etc. As an example the crew and director Joseph Kosinski worked with the US Navy for over a year to see how they could film the movie and where the cameras could go. A little under eight minutes in length.

A Love Letter To Aviation – Lots of shots of Tom Cruise’s P51 Mustang and everyone saying how much he loves flying. Less than five minutes in length.

Forging The Darkstar – The Darkstar is the ‘experimental’ hypersonic aircraft at the start of the movie. Very much a Kosinski creation who worked with Skunk Works, the experimental division of Lockheed Martin, on the design of the aircraft. This short explains how they came up with the design of the aircraft, what was involved, how much others were involved etc. Just over seven minutes in length.

Masterclass With Tom Cruise – Cannes Film Festival – Footage from the Cannes Film Festival with Tom Cruise being interviewed live on stage on a wide range of subjects around film and cinema. Just shy of 50 minutes.

You also get two music videos: Hold My Hand – Lady Gaga Music Video and I Ain’t Worried – Onerepublic Music Video

Top Gun: Maverick is available now to Download & Keep and on 4K Ultra HD™, Blu-ray™ and DVD.
