Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

Cardigan, Large Glasses, Glass Of Whisky

17th September 2011

I can’t claim to being the biggest fan of movies that win awards, think I may have mentioned that before. So it was with zero expectations that I watched TTSS, which is sometimes the correct way to go into a movie.

I should also say I haven’t read the book and whilst I’m sure I’ve seen the BBC adaptation, I can’t claim to remember it.

The movie is directed by Thomas Alfredson, you might know him better from Let the Right One In, the absolutely fantastic Swedish Vampire movie. He directs the movie with aplomb, almost British like in its nature, exactly what the film requires.

The cast of the film reads like a who’s who and who has been, will be and was of British actors and actresses (deep breath): Gary Oldman, Mark Strong, John Hurt, Toby Jones, Colin Firth, Benedict Cumberbatch, Stephen Graham, Simon McBurney, Tom Hardy, Roger Lloyd Pack and last but not least, the awesome Kathy Burke.

The movie is set in the early 70’s, cigarette smoke and brown colours dominate, and the movie is full of long shots, people thinking, not much dialogue and silence on the soundtrack.

There’s also an expectation that you’ll fill in some parts yourself (couple of sections aren’t fully explained and there’s a “wait a minute” moment)

Everyone is fantastic in the movie, even the people I have forgot to mention, it is easy to see why it’s winning so many awards.

If you are expecting Bond or maybe these days Bourne, then this isn’t the movie from you, it is slow but it isn’t bad, not perfect, but not bad at all.

As an aside ITV in the UK have, for some unknown reason, been showing Jaws movies. Now not the original, oh no, they’ve been showing Jaws 3(D) which I don’t think I’ve ever seen but it swiftly entered my top ten of never watch again movies and now Jaws 4 has just finished (with Michael Caine in!) which swiftly follows 3 in the ranks of, urg, 1.5 hours of my life I’ll never get back again!
