The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent

He Is Legend

26th April 2022

We all know Nicolas Cage, he has a storied career.  His filmography has taken so many dramatic shifts over the years and his fans love him for it. He’s struck emotional cords with his performances in Moonstruck, Pig and Leaving Las Vegas, yet he’s also wielded a chainsaw in Mandy and became a meme thanks to the remake of The Wicker Man when he exclaims, “Not the bees!”

Yes, we all know Nick Cage… but do we really know him?  That is the core of what The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent is all about. Nicolas Cage plays a heightened version of himself when he takes a job to spend time with a super fan in Spain, the CIA elicits his help because the man who hired him, Javi, played by Pedro Pascal (“The Mandalorian”, “Wonder Woman 1984“) is suspected to be a crime lord behind a kidnapping.

In an interview Cage has said that a few changes where made to make his role a more well rounded character for the sake of storytelling. But for the most part, he is playing himself. This is something the movie takes full advantage of, it lets Cage address his critics, his financial/career situation and all the baggage that comes with being a well traveled international celebrity. It is fitting that Nicolas Cage is also a producer on this movie.

An actor starring as themselves is a rare phenomenon. Sure they often make cameos, but few movies feature an actor starring this way. Other examples would be JCVD and Pauly Shore is Dead.

Unbearable Weight not only shows us Nick Cage the actor but also how he is as a father. Lily Mo Sheen (“Underworld: Evolution”, “Everybody’s Fine”) plays Addy Cage, his teenage daughter. Nicolas Cage currently does not have a daughter, but is the proud father of two sons.

Sharon Horgan plays Olivia, a fictional ex-wife of Cage. It seems as though Olivia is an amalgamation of his prior wives, which include Patricia Arquette, Lisa Marie Presley and Alice Yung Kim. Kim being the mother of one of his sons. It is worth noting that the character Olivia works as a makeup artist, much like Erika Koike, one of Cage’s ex-wives in real life.

The comedy of Unbearable Weight is unrelenting. It truly delivers the laughs and provides so much for fans of Cage and cinema in general. The self-referential nature of this story is not just a gimmick, it is artfully done and is organic to the plot.

This movie really has it all, action sequences, plenty of laughs and emotional beats. A true love letter to Nicolas Cage and the art of film itself. Unbearable Weight marks a very strong second feature for Director Tom Gormican who also co-wrote the script with Kevin Etten. I highly recommend this movie. It adds an extra level of enjoyment seeing this movie in a crowded theater, as the laughter echoes from moviegoers around you.

The acting overall is great. Moments of the story are borderline over the top but never fully unbelievable. Grounded natural beats break up the larger than life action story. Make no mistake, Nicolas Cage is a living legend, and this is a legendary move for him, part of a rich acting career we can only hope is far from over.
