The first Lego Movie was a success, a surprise to some perhaps, but a success. It achieved this by managing to poke fun at everything, from movies to TV shows, and itself, whilst being over the top cheesy and fun.
The second part pickups immediately where the first one ends, but then spins forward five years. The kids are grown up, and the once awesome city is now a desolate wasteland which is frequently invaded by Duplo.
When General Mayhem, Stephanie Beatriz (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine (TV)”, “BoJack Horseman (TV)”), turns up and kidnaps a few main characters, including Wyldstyle, Elizabeth Banks (“The Happytime Murders“, “Modern Family (TV)”), Emmet, Chris Pratt (“Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom“, “Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2“), sets out to save her.
He must negotiate various paths to get there but luckily he meets Rex Dangervest (also Pratt) along the way who helps him reach planet Duplo and save his friends.
To save them, Emmet must stop the impending wedding of Batman, Will Arnett (“BoJack Horseman (TV)”, “Arrested Development (TV)”), to Queen Watevra Wa’Nabi, Tiffany Haddish (“Night School”, “Uncle Drew”), and un-brainwash his friends from the ‘this song will get stuck inside your head’ song.
Whilst The Lego Movie 2 is funny, it isn’t as funny as the first one, but the main issue is that it’s suddenly become a musical, a fact pointed out by some of the characters on more than one occasion.
It feels a little lazy if I’m honest, rather than explaining what’s going on, or showing us, the team just shoehorn another crappy, cheesy pop song in there in the hope no-one will notice how much of the one hour and 47 minutes is actually taken up with songs.
The whole movies feels very saccharine, much more so than first time round, the characters don’t progress, just show that they have ‘sides’, which are generally instantly forgotten the moment it’s convenient.
The movie is funny, the animation is as lovely as ever, but the story is meandering and disjointed and some of the new characters are either underutilised, General Mayhem, or just outright annoying, Queen Watevra.
Sadly, for The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, everything is definitely not awesome, and it definitely won’t get stuck in your head.
