Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows

All Action & Slow Mo

2nd January 2010

In the decision you currently have, particularly in the UK, around which Sherlock Holmes to spend your hard earned cash on, I feel I can offer some wisdom.

I’d like to say I watched Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows on the ‘big screen’ however I watched it at the Odeon on Tottenham Court Road which isn’t much larger than my TV screen on that front.

However, that aside, the film is an all action flick from start to finish, but in terms of being a Sherlock Holmes film, I’m afraid it would be very remiss of me to class this Guy Ritchie / Robert Downey Jr romp as just that.

This could have, and probably should have, been called anything. There are very few elements of Sherlock Holmes, I guess Victorian Action Man doesn’t quite have the same ring to it though!

No I’m not saying it’s a bad film, I’m just saying it isn’t a Sherlock Holmes film, the current BBC adaptation trounces it on that front.

The film is just a fairly a-typical action film set in Victorian times, Downey is the same as he was in the first one, his sidekick Dr Watson, played again by Jude Law, is the same as he was in the first one too.

I’m not sure why Ritchie decided that showing Holme’s arch enemy James Moriarty from the off-set was a good idea. It just leaves a lot more questions open, like why not just deal with him earlier if he knows who he is?

Also, Mr Ritchie seems to have suddenly found the ‘slow-mo’ button on the cameras, expect lots of r e a l l y s l o w action scenes…lots of them.
