Police Story 3: Supercop (1992) (Ging Chaat Goo Si III: Chiu Kup Ging Chaat) 4k UHD Review

Michelle Yeoh Teams Up With Jackie Chan For Police Story 3

16th October 2022

Coming four years after Police Story 2, the gang, most of them at least, are back. It’s a much more international cast this time round with some of the movie actually being in English. Whilst Bill Wong, Bill Tung (“Rumble in the Bronx”, “Police Story 3: Supercop”), is back, Kwok-Hung Lam does not return.

What we do get however, is the fabulous Michelle Yeoh (“Twinkle Twinkle Lucky Stars”, “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”), and a returning May, Maggie Cheung (“Police Story”, “Hero”), as Jackie’s girlfriend.

Chan is now the poster boy for the police service and is teamed up with Michelle Yeoh: Insp. Jessica Yang – Director of Interpol (Yeoh) to stop a Chinese drug czar. Chan goes undercover to infiltrate the gang with Yeoh eventually joining him.

There’s a lot more guns involved in this Police Story, a lot more explosions, it, at times, has a Commando feel to it. We do get to see some fighting from both Chan and Yeoh, but this isn’t quite the same as the previous Police Story iterations, you even see Chan shoot some bad guys dead.

It all culminates, as these things tend to do, in a massive car chase, involving a helicopter, a rooftop fight scene and then that now infamous shot of Chan hanging from said helicopter as it flies through the air.

In terms of extras for this disc, there’s the usual commentary from Frank Djeng and F.J. DeSanto or Mike Leeder and Arne Venema. There’s the US version of the movie, an interview with John Kreng (a stunt coordinator), a bit about Jackie Chan video games, location guide for the movie, some archival interviews, outtakes and trailers and promos.

So, there you have it, the Police Story trilogy…of which many of you may ask why it wasn’t a quadrology with 2004’s New Police Story included? To that I would say…I have absolutely no idea. Perhaps the studio involved in that wouldn’t let them, perhaps, as it wasn’t as long ago as these three, they felt there was no need for a 4k restoration.

It could also be that many don’t consider New Police story to be part of the original Police Story movies. Who knows? Well, the people at Eureka obviously.

As well as the movies you also get a fairly hefty booklet which contains words, which talk about Jackie Chan and his history, as well as plenty of photos from the sets of the trilogy, movie posters from around the world and more.
