When you consider that each animator can only get through three to four seconds per day, they had to run ten animators simultaneously to make the film in a reasonable time-frame.
So, what do you get with your Blu-Ray, well, an introduction from Aardman Films and all-round stop-motion animation guru Peter Lord who waxes lyrical about the film including how the characters, when still, are stylised and strange looking, but it’s in motion when they come alive and draw you in.
A making of the movie in which you see lots of decapitated heads to start with, but it takes you through all the aspects of how the film was put together. We get to see the 3D printed heads, the skeletons, the sets, everything.
Perhaps best of all, you get the animated audition short for Gaspard Schlatter who played Courgette. It’s easy to see why they chose him (none of the children in the film are actors), he’s very funny in the audition but also shows emotion and he’s cheeky. Brilliant.
There’s also an extended version of that interview/audition which is cut with some of the children now and interviews with the director Claude Barras.
A brief film of some award wins at the Festival D’Annecy, the theatrical trailer and an into film animation workshop, which is some children making their own versions of the characters and playing with animating them.
As for the movie itself you get the US dubbed version and the original French version with English subtitles. We recommend you watch the latter. The quality is superb.
My Life As A Courgette is simply a wonderful film, beautifully shot, brilliantly made and the Blu-Ray has enough extras to keep you happy and see what goes into making a film like this.
