When Lady Bird burst onto the scene in February 2018, it stole many a heart with its frank, open view on teenage life for a young girl growing up in Sacramento.
Greta Gerwig’s tale of Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson warmed all but the coldest of hearts and, as we said at the time: “It’s a short, sharp, heart-warming and funny tale that will no doubt delight as many as it infuriates.”
Here we take a short look as Lady Bird arrives on DVD and Blu-ray soon.
The first step with any DVD or Blu-ray is the menu system. Seems a strange place to start I realise and normally doesn’t even get a mention, but I feel like it needs mentioning as someone at Universal (or wherever) has decided to go with icons instead of words.
Usually fine but the icons don’t mean anything to anyone except the person who came up with them (why/how does an asterisk mean extras?). So, for the most part, you end up pressing them until you find what you want, it’s an unnecessary take on the usual menu.
Anyway, once you understand what they all mean you then realise that one of the reasons they’ve taken this approach is because there’s not a great deal behind the menus.
You have a 15-minute documentary Realizing Lady Bird, which features Gerwig talking about the film, how it came about, what it means to her and some behind the scenes footage as they are making the film.
Here’s a clip from Lady Bird:
You also get to hear from Saoirse Ronan, where you really appreciate how good the accent is she put on for the film, and Laurie Metcalf, Tracy Letts, Beanie Feldstein, Timothee Chalamet and Lucas Hedges.
There’s also commentary for the film from Gerwig and cinematographer Sam Levy and, of course, the film itself which has a great transfer.
That, in a nutshell, is Lady Bird on Blu-ray. There’s not a great deal of additional content but, in truth, when the move itself is this good, you’d have to say it doesn’t really need it, and the Realizing Lady Bird tells you pretty much all you need to know.
The 2018 Golden Globe best actress, best supporting actress and best screenplay winner and three times BAFTA and five times Academy Award nominee film Lady Bird is available on digital download now and DVD and Blu-ray from 2nd July 2018.
