Fast & Furious 7 Review

By now you know exactly what you are getting with the Furious franchise (or Fast franchise, whatever they’re calling them these days): guns, cars, girls, music, bullets and fights. So, frankly, if you go into these movies expecting anything else, more fool you.

The seventh instalment doesn’t disappoint on any of the above, however in this one we get a new element, we get emotion. Rather, what I should say is, apart from the very moving end, they try and add emotion.

Chris Morgan is back on writing duties, he wrote the original and five and six of the franchise, along with Wanted and 47 Ronin. We get some laughs and we get some cheesy lines, you get the impression Dwayne Johnson has an absolute laugh playing Hobbs.

Around about this point is when I’d start pointing out the ‘flaws’ in the movie, the problems, the issues. I do have to say one, I’m sorry I can’t keep it in. Directorial duties go to James Wan (Saw, Insidious, The Conjuring) which is an interesting choice.

Look, I love that the vast majority of Hollywood fight scenes are now martial arts, it took them long enough! However, it pains me to see that they haven’t followed the way of directing these fights. We don’t need cameras that flip or twist and turn or go all shaky, the martial artists do all that for us, they add the speed and drama. But Wan has gone very Bourne Identity on us which is a massive shame when you have Tony Jaa and Ronda Rousey in fight scenes. Let us see what they do, not close-ups and hand-held cams.

Anyway, besides that point I don’t feel I can say the wrongs of the movie and, let’s face it, you would still go and see it regardless of what I said here.

So, I will say this: The movie is a very fitting tribute to Paul Walker. It has more chases, explosions and countries then you can shake a stick at. It’s silly, it’s fun, it’s escapism. Newcomer to the franchise Jason Statham drops into it like he was born to play it and Kurt Russell, looking old, does so too.

There’s amazing stunts, amazing locations, amazing fights and, of course, amazing cars and really, what else do you want from these movies?
