After a 17-year hiatus, Will Smith (“Aladdin”, “Spies In Disguise“) and Martin Lawrence (“The Beach Bum“, “Wild Hogs”) have re-teamed for another action-packed film that has more laughs than the previous two films.
Mike Lowery (Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Lawrence) are still partners in Miami but the only thing that has changed, is their age. Marcus declares that he wants to retire and become a stay-at-home grandpa while Mike wants to remain the same cop he’s been for almost 30 years.
After an incident that puts Mike in the hospital, Marcus is left distraught and decides to retire to live out his remaining years at home watching Novellas. Once Mike is out the hospital, he vows to find out who put him in the hospital with or without Marcus on his side.
Mike asks to be head of the case but is instead assigned by Captain Howard, Joe Pantalino (“Memento”, “The Matrix”) to consult the young AMMO Squad Vanessa Hudgens (“Second Act”), Alexander Ludwig (“Vikings (TV)”), Charles Melton (“Riverdale”) which is headlined by Mike’s ex-girlfriend Rita, Paolo Nunez (“The Purge (TV)”). With AMMO’s help, Mike convinces Marcus to have one last ride together as they search for the people responsible for putting Mike in hospital.
We have waited 25 years for a good ‘Bad Boys’ story and I couldn’t be happier these characters finally got one! With the previous two efforts just showing explosion and explosion, this one takes it’s time to craft the story and executes in a very surprisingly good way.
Michael Bay (“Transformers”, “Bad Boys”) gave the reigns of this franchise to first-time feature directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah (“Snowfall (TV)”) and this film benefited a lot from the new blood.
These two brought a very fun story approach to the series rather than just focusing on the action, which I still enjoyed since it didn’t feel forced. The characters could breathe and have real conversations which wasn’t common before.
Smith and Lawrence played extremely well off another and their comradery pops on-screen even better than before. They both get to show their dramatic chops which is always welcome and hit their comedy notes, which Lawrence gets the bulk of. I was very glad to see Martin back on the big screen after a few years away from it.
The supporting cast does their job as well as they could with highlights being Pantalino and Nunez. Pantalino gets some great one-liners and Nunez brings a lot of heart as one of the few strong female characters in the series.
I had a great time with this film and as I write this, there is already talk of the fourth film, which I would gladly line up for. If everyone brings the same charm and laughs they did in this one, then I don’t see why we can’t see this series run a bit longer than we all expected it to.
