Not Adjusted Enough

I went into this movie thinking it was a loose take on George Orwell’s 1984…I guess ‘loose’ would be the word to use here.

It’s actually based on a short story by Philip K. Dick called Adjustment Team, which I’ll confess to not having read, I’ve read a lot of his works but this one I’ve missed.

So it might be an unfair comparison to look at 1984 but there are similarities given the story centres around ‘people’ controlling ‘other people’ making sure they follow ‘the plan’ written for them by ‘the chairman’.

That’s pretty much the story in a nutshell and, whilst there’s nothing really wrong with the film per-say, it doesn’t really do much either.

There’s a touch of excitement here, a dash there and a bit of romance (well quite a lot really) thrown in for good measure.

But at the end of the film, a short film these days which is always an indication that things aren’t well – it runs at around one hour 30 minutes – you are left with a feeling of…oh…really…that’s it is it?

Matt Damon is pretty much Matt Damon and Emily Blunt ditto and there’s nothing really wrong with the acting, although some of the dialogue can chug a little.

George Nolfi is the man behind the lenses for his directorial debut and he also wrote the screenplay, having previously written The Bourne Ultimatum, The Sentinel and Ocean’s Twelve amongst a few others, and a pattern is starting to emerge with his writing style. Hollywood seems to like it though evidently.

It’s hard to say I didn’t like this film as it almost feels there was nothing to like, it’s a bit of a nothing film really, I would be surprised if it gripped anyone or gained any kind of ‘cult’ style following. I’m pretty sure it will be consigned to the movie archives and that’s not a bad thing.
