Wesley Snipes is back after a two-year hiatus, one you suspect wasn’t self-inflicted. This time Snipes is tackling not-so little green men from the sky, from a cabin, in the woods.

Final Recall (The Recall in the US) follows five friends as they venture to a remote lake house for a vacation.

RJ Mitte (Breaking Bad, Who’s Driving Doug), Jedidiah Goodacre (Tomorrowland, Descendants), Laura Bilgeri (Toby Goes To Camp, The Silent Mountain), Niko Pepaj (Daytime Divas (TV), Awkward (TV)) and Hannah Rose May (Ballers (TV), Twisted Sisters) are the five in question.

As night begins to fall, news reports begin to come in of dark, strange-looking clouds in the sky. These are followed by shots of alien craft hovering around the world.

Then they arrive. These grey, tall beings from outer space. They’ve come for Snipes, they’ve met before and he’s been endowed with powers, which for some reason he never uses.

People get shot, others are ‘taken’ but Goodacre, Bilgeri and Mitte, manage to make it to Snipes cabin.

Another encounter with the visitors sees Mitte taken. Not long after, Goodacre awakes to find himself onboard the ship in the sky.

He tries to save his friends, from whatever experiments are being conducted, but is recaptured and sent for further experiments.

Will they make it off the ship alive? How many others have been abducted? Why are they here?

Final Recall is a fun film. The special effects aren’t so bad, we’re not talking Prometheus or anything, but I’ve seen a lot worse.

Snipes is fun and unnerving at the start. When we get into “now I must describe the events of the film”, things get a little bogged down.

However, despite a short 1.5-hour run-time, the movie can feel a tad ’empty’ when the action stops. Writer and director, Mauro Borrelli (best known as an illustrator for pretty much every film ever made), doesn’t quite manage to bring everything together.

When the film ends you’ll find it hard to put your finger on exactly what it is you’ve just seen. It’s not a rip-roaring non-stop actioner. It’s not a mind-bending sci-fi, I’m not sure what it is.

Final Recall sits somewhere between a movie for the Sci-fi channel and something straight to streaming. Probably not the comeback Snipes was hoping for.
